Archival Significance
Moyana was a Zimbabwean poet and educationist whose doctoral research, Michigan State, 1978, examined colonial education under Rhodesia and Nyasaland. This book is the published, developed version of that critique, extended into the post-independence period.
Institutional Context
Published posthumously by ZPH, the dedication thanks his wife and children for enduring “the absence of a husband and father to allow this work to be completed,” indicating Moyana did not live to see its release.
Content Summary
Examines the colonial education system’s role in cultural and social conflict, and argues for an approach to post-independence education grounded in creative and liberatory practice rather than the reproduction of colonial pedagogical structures.
Research Utility
A key primary source for Zimbabwean education policy debates of the 1980s, and for tracing how colonial-era critiques, Moyana’s own doctoral work included, were carried into post-independence policy argument.
