Abantu Archives is an independent archival research initiative operated by Tinashe Hwindingwi, based in Harare, Zimbabwe.
1. What Abantu Archives is
Abantu Archives is a research platform dedicated to the preservation, digitisation, and critical interpretation of African historical records, with a focus on Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, and the Central African colonial period. It is an independent, African-led initiative — not an institutional archive, a library, or a commercial service.
The collection comprises catalogue records, contextual essays, bibliographic references, digitised materials, and related research outputs. Records are curated, annotated, and organised by Abantu Archives and are subject to ongoing revision as research develops.
2. Permitted use
You may access and use this website and its content for personal, non-commercial research and educational purposes, including:
- Reading, browsing, and searching the collection
- Citing catalogue records, essays, or bibliographic entries in academic work, with appropriate attribution to Abantu Archives
- Sharing links to specific pages or records

The Abantu Archives name, visual identity, original catalogue records, contextual essays, annotations, and editorial structure are the intellectual property of Abantu Archives and Tinashe Hwindingwi. All rights are reserved.
The collection also includes references to, and in some cases digitised versions of, materials whose underlying copyright belongs to third parties — including publishers, institutions, authors, and their estates. The presence of a record in the Abantu Archives catalogue does not transfer or diminish any third-party rights in that material. It is your responsibility to identify and comply with the copyright terms of any third-party material you wish to use.
Where images or reproductions appear on this site, their provenance and rights status are noted in the relevant catalogue record where known. If you believe a rights holder has not been properly identified, contact us.
5. Accuracy and completeness
Abantu Archives is a living research collection. Records are added, revised, and contextualised on an ongoing basis. While we exercise care in the curation and annotation of materials, we do not warrant that any record is complete, definitive, or free from error.
Catalogue records reflect the state of research at the time of compilation. Historical materials may contain language, depictions, or framings that are now understood to be offensive or inaccurate — these are preserved as part of the historical record, not as endorsements. Where Abantu Archives provides contextualisation, that contextualisation represents our interpretation and is subject to scholarly review and revision.
