This study, through the use of Oral and written sources, traces and analyses the origin and development of the Lozi State and its institutions. It attempts to reconstruct the main features of the Makololo State and its impact on Bulozi in the middle century and throws new light on the post-Kololo period to 1900 through a reassessment of Lewanika’s career and the Lozi response to European forces.
