Notes Traditional recipes for natural dyes are used by craftspeople throughout Africa, but very little has actually been published on the subject.
Lorna Hindmarsh’s Kenya Dyer’s Notebook is a collection of recipes that Mrs Hindmarsh tried and tested at her weaving network at Njoro; and this small but valuable book has provided us with much useful information, which the author kindly allowed us to quote in dyeing with Plants in Zimbabwe.
Natural dyes are an inexpensive alternative to chemical dyes, which are often difficult and expensive to obtain. The range of colours which can be made gives great scope to the craftsperson. It is hoped that Dyeing with Plants in Zimbabwe will be a useful reference book throughout the country.
