Information
After Zimbabwe got its independence on 18 April 1980, one of Government’s main concerns was tc create conditions conducive to women’s participation in the development process. Although one of the tools used to pursue this goal has been the legislative channel, women are constrained in exercising their legal rights because the new laws often do not conform to the customary laws and practices. Women also feel intimidated by the intricate legal processes and the male-dominated court structure.
There is an urgent need to disseminate information to both men and women on the laws enacted after independence. This simple guide will help women understand the law. It paraphrases key family laws in a simple layman’s language. When the use of legal terms is unavoidable, an attempt has been made; to explain such legal knowledge.
This Guide is simple enough to be used as an individual book let. but it is best used in workshops, seminars or in group sessions, like a study circle, with a resource person who has some legal knowledge.
Mary Tandon, a lawyer by profession, works with Non-Governmental organisations in the area of women and the law.
