Profile – The University of Zimbabwe traces its origins to 1945, when Rhodesian politician and educator Manfred Hodson formed the Rhodesia University Association to raise funds for a university college. The Legislative Assembly of Southern Rhodesia backed the idea the following year, and by 1948 land had been set aside at Mount Pleasant, Salisbury.
Profile – On 11 November 1965, Prime Minister Ian Smith’s government issued the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, breaking Southern Rhodesia away from Britain rather than accept British insistence on a path to majority rule.
